我很少聽爵士樂，原因很簡單－這東西超出我的理解範圍。就是不知道這歌為什麼到了某個段落會突然變調，或者是節奏突然改版，這就是所謂的 Free Style 嗎？真是深奧的讓人一點頭緒都抓不到。然而一切的改變就從我發現 Ella Fitzgerald 開始。

爵士樂界有三大女伶－ Ella Fitzgerald、Billie Holiday、Sarah Vaughan。當年村上春樹正開始在台灣竄紅的時候，所有文青、偽文青們幾乎全都一股腦地投入 Billie Holiday 的懷抱中。我個人對 Billie Holiday 是沒啥感覺的（當然，我也不讀村上春樹），當時有人告訴我，Billie Holiday 是屬於成熟的人才懂得欣賞的聲音。那麼，年紀輕輕就一股腦地迷戀 Billie Holiday 豈不就跟小鬼偷抽菸一樣是在裝大人咧？

認識 Ella Fitzgerald 是從聽到西門玫瑰店頭播送著「Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas」這張搖擺樂耶誕專輯開始的（林大姐曾說過到底有誰會喜歡耶誕音樂這種東西啊？I do... ），然後就瘋狂的迷戀上這個歌聲甜美快樂又永遠戲劇感十足的搖擺樂歌手，之後陸陸續續買了他的專輯大概有十幾張。但是你現在問我喜歡爵士樂嗎？我想我還是只能說我喜歡 Ella Fitzgerald，至於爵士樂嘛... 嗯........

在我擁有的 Ella 專輯中，她跟 Luis Armstrong 合作演唱蓋希文名曲的「Our Love Is Here To Stay : Ella & Louis Sing Gershwin」可以算是我最喜歡的一張。開朗大媽 Ella 跟逗趣大叔 Louis 的搭配真是一絕，不必開口說話，兩個人只靠歌聲就可以將她們幽默風趣的個性盡現無遺，尤其在這首「Let's Call The Whole Thing Off」中，蓋希文拿「腔調」問題大做文章，描寫一對情侶總是為了發音這種雞毛蒜皮的小事拌嘴。光看歌詞恐怕還看得一頭霧水，但是兩個人一開口唱，就輕易讓人會心一笑。中譯歌詞要翻出那個腔調問題很難，但是中文裡常有許多用詞問題，也很容易產生無謂的爭執（譬如是要入聯還是返聯？）Well... Let's call the whole thing off....

這首歌還有很多人唱過獨唱版，但我喜歡對唱版。一個巴掌拍不響，拌嘴就是要兩個人才有趣啊！
